#90's A Middle Class Biopic

 #90’s A Middle Class Biopic

This web series on ETV WIN is a superb biopic on the middle class lives. It is entirely in Telugu and those who are not Telugu speaking are not likely to understand this and enjoy the drama that is very natural and interesting.

The story telling is excellent and the leading characters, Sivaji and Vasuki, excelled in enacting their respective roles. Even the child and adolescent characters acquitted themselves well.

It is a superb series, not to be missed. EtvWin suddenly, but frequently, comes up with such a beautiful presentation and takes its viewers by surprise.

These days, the web series in Telugu are few and far between and when a show like this is there before us, we cannot afford to miss

Vyavastha -Web Series

  Vyavastha - Web Series

Vyavastha -Web Series, currently streaming on Zee5, is a good entertainer, though the length of the series is much more than one would like it to be. It has 8 episodes and all of them are longer.

Full marks for selection of cast and there can be no complaints in this area. All of them have done their bit and acquitted themselves well. But, one should admit that Sampat Raj (Avinash Chakravarty), who is the villain, stands tall, performance-wise. He is a defence lawyer, whom the heroine Hebba Patel, his client initially, wants to be replaced by another lawyer.

The story telling is really good and the picturisation is not to be found fault with. The court scenes shot also appear almost real but the police department is shown to be working for the villain, Avinash Chakravarty (Sampat Raj). And as a senior advocate, the respect shown for him in the court by the judges is also understandable, but one fails to comprehend how a defence lawyer rejected by his client can be permitted to step into the shoes of the Public Prosecutor and argue in the court for prosecution of the same client and the lawyer defending her.

Lastly, the commonly used swear word by Avinash Chakravarty (Sampat Raj) is “fucking” as a prefix to another word. Such things appear to have been permitted in Web Series, but inter-state invective also has been used in three places by him. It is a Bengali four-letter word, “Boka Choda”, a very common day-to-day swear word used in Bengal. The purpose of introducing a swear word of another state in this web series is not understandable. Various web series now streaming online threaten to end us up in cultural decadence.

Overall, it is a good series, but if the length is pruned to suit the convenience of the working people, it is bound to be a little more successful. Last, but not the least, removal of swear words will in no way take away the sheen off the web series.

This is available on Zee5 in two languages of audio, Tamil and Telugu and with subtitles in English.

The incomplete Bahubali

BAHUBALI

Recently, I have seen the movie Bahubali, which has been the talk of the town for quite some time now. The movie is good for more reasons than one – photography, selection of the cast, narration and the direction were all excellent and the music scores reasonably good. But, the fact remains that the movie-goer is taken for a ride. When one chooses to see a movie, one expects a complete story-line and one does not normally return midway through a movie.

But, in Bahubali, the movie ends without the story coming to a logical end. The villain remains in his illegal possession of the throne. The hero does not even know why his father has been killed by the trusted lieutenant/slave. The vow of the hero’s mother to see the funeral pyre of the villain is not fulfilled. And the movie ends abruptly, with a message that Bahubali II would be ready in the year 2016.

The fare that is dished out is incomplete and the audience, therefore, is not at all happy. It is as though one pays for a plate of idly, is served only one idly and chutney and promised another idly and sambar the next week and that too, on payment all over again.

If the story-line is not complete, it should have been announced beforehand and the choice should have been given to the film-goers whether or not to watch an incomplete film. They cannot just announce that at the end of the film. It is not a sequel that they are promising in 2016, like so many other popular films. It can be a sequel only when the first version has a narration that has a logical conclusion. A sequel constitutes only an extension of a story and any remainder of a story is never called a sequel.
